Up to 5,000 gather for Clontarf-wall protest

Organisers say 5,000 people have gathered in north Dublin to protest plans by their local authority to build a nine-foot high flood defence wall in Clontarf.

The proposed scheme for the Clontarf promenade will block sea views, extending for three kilometres along the Clontarf Road.

Work is due to begin on the project next year, but people in the area say it will create safety concerns, as well as blocking the view of the sea.

One resident told 98 FM he had been living in the area and using the promenade for 32 years.

"I used to walk it every day…It was a beautiful walk and now, I'll be sealed off from everybody if I walk (there)," he said.
