McGuinness criticises 'trial by television' after Prime Time debate

Sinn Féin's Presidential candidate Martin McGuinness has complained that last night's Prime Time debate amounted to a "trial by television".

He said it was unfair, totally out of order, and wrong that he was accused of being a murderer during the TV debate.

However he denied that there was a confrontation between himself and the programme's presenter Miriam O'Callaghan afterwards.

He said he asked for a one-to-one meeting with her, but there were no raised voices.

"There was no confrontation. I am not that sort of person," he said.

"I am quite content to leave the judgement of last night's programme - the fairness of otherwise of it - to the people of Ireland. They are the ones that I'm depending on in this election."
