Family protest farmer's incarceration

The family of a farmer, jailed for refusing to purge a contempt of court over a land dispute, have today called for his immediate release.

Around 50 members of Daniel Doherty's family and friends stood outside Limerick Prison this afternoon to protest over his jailing.

The 40-year-old from Templeglantine, Co Limerick, is entering his 10th week in jail after refusing to vacate a house and lands, which the courts have ruled are lawfully owned by another party.

Mr Doherty, who worked and lived on the lands for more than 20 years, maintains that he was promised the land by the former owners before they died.
