Gardaí said this afternoon that they are now treating the fatal fire at a house at Termon Road, Boyle, Co Roscommon as suspicious.

The fire was discovered between 2.30am and 3am this morning.

A five-year-old girl lost her life in the blaze. It is understood she was found dead in an upstairs bedroom.

A man in his late 20s, believed to be the girl's father, and two children escaped from the house. They are being treated at Sligo General Hospital.

Fire crews reported parts of the first floor had collapsed into the bottom of the house in the intense blaze.

Twenty firefighters responded to the call.

The scene is currently being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau and the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Khalid Jabber will carry out a post mortem examination on the body of the deceased girl this evening at Sligo General Hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Termon Road area of Boyle or anyone with any information about this incident to contact the incident room at Boyle garda station on 071 9664620.
