Daughter of deceased blood-transfusion woman hits out at State
The daughter of an 83-year-old woman, who contracted Hepatitis C from a blood transfusion has today said "shame on the State" following an inquest into her mother's death.
Dublin City Coroner's Court heard that cirrhosis of the liver from Hepatitis was a significant factor in Patricia Callaghan's death on December 12 last - nearly five months after suffering a stroke.
The mother-of-three from Durrow Road in Kimmage, Dublin received a contaminated blood transfusion either before or after a hysterectomy in the 1970s or 1980s.
Her daughter Rita said her mother was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2003 and considered her subsequent compensation from the tribunal as "blood money".
"Shame on the State," she said. "They know who they are."
