Gardaí arrest man in connection with discovery of cash-trapping machine
Gardaí in Greystones have arrested a 21-year-old male in connection with the discovery of a cash-trapping device that was attached to an ATM, it has emerged today.
The device was discovered on Church road, Greystones, yesterday.
The suspect was detained at Bray garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.
He was later charged and bailed to a special sitting of Bray District Court on Wednesday August 3 at 10.30am.
A cash-trapping device traps the cash as it exits the machine. The customer, believing that the machine is broken, moves onto the next machine or, in some cases, tries again. When the customer leaves the area, the criminal returns and removes the device and cash.
Gardaí said that they would like to remind the public of the care that should be taken at ATMs and to report any suspicious activity or irregularities to the Gardaí and also to their bank.
