Man declared dead after rush to hospital from Garda custody

An investigation has been launched after a man who was garda custody in Cork city died after being rushed to hospital.
He was arrested yesterday and died in hospital after becoming ill while being held at Anglesea Street garda station.
The man, who was in his 40s, was arrested by gardaí at about 7pm yesterday evening, after an incident at Parnell Place, in Cork city.
He was being detained under the Public Order Act at Anglesea Street garda station, where his condition deteriorated.
An ambulance transferred the man to Cork University Hospital for medical attention in the early hours of this morning, but he lost his fight for life shortly before 3pm this afternoon.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Garda Ombudsman Commission and the office of the State Pathologist was also informed. A post mortem examination is due to take place tomorrow afternoon at Cork University Hospital.
Investigating officers are now appealing for information, particularly from anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the vicinity of the bus station and Parnell Place, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm yesterday.
