A company has been fined €100,000 for the death of a construction worker during the building of Charlestown Shopping Centre in Finglas, North Dublin.

Father-of-two Edward Fowler, 28, died after he was struck by a plank that had blown off scaffolding in high winds during an evacuation of the site.

G&T Crampton of Ballintaggart House, Clonskeagh Road pleaded guilty to failing to close a section of the site on January 18, 2008.

The court heard G&T Crampton has six previous convictions, including two fatalities, under health and safety legislation.

The company’s website currently states: “G&T Crampton have a strong safety culture across all levels of its organisation.”

It continues later: “The board of directors approve company Health and Safety procedures, monitor performance at each board meeting and set objectives annually.

“The implementation of procedures are monitored ongoing through regular internal and external independent auditing of workplaces.”
