2,000 protest against Portlaoise hospital cutbacks

More than 2,000 people have attended a protest in Portlaoise, Co Laois this afternoon, in opposition to the downgrading of services at the local hospital.

The A&E unit at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise may soon have to shut from 8pm until 8am each night, due to a shortage of junior doctors.
