Creighton: Public sector pay needs to come into line with Europe

More needs to be done to try and bring the pay scales of Irish public sector workers more into line with our European Counterparts, according to the Minister for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton.

Her comments come as new figures out today shows that 1,000 employees at Ireland's seven universities and the Dublin Institute of Technology earn an annual salary of more than €100,000.

According to the Sunday Times, the country's highest paid university employee is UCD's Vice President for research, Des Fitzgerald, who earns over €263,000 a year.

Last week, the Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin announced that he is to cap the salaries of all civil servants at €200,000.

Minister Creighton thinks this was a welcome decision.
