Euro Pact demonstrations set to begin later

A series of Europe-wide demonstrations are to take place later today, to protest against the Euro Pact.

The European Stability Mechanism is expected to be signed off by EU Governments at the end of June.

Similar protests are to go ahead in Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick to coincide with rally's across mainland Europe.

Organisers of the events here - Real Democracy Now! Ireland - says the pact includes measures of fiscal, wage and public service change for all EU member states.

Eamonn Crudden, a participant in today's protests, said that the Irish demonstrations are a reaction to a call from Spain’s Real Democracy Now! movement for a co-ordinated European response to the upcoming ratification of this Pact.

"What we're doing is to an extent inspired by what's going on in the squares in Spain and what's been going on in Greece over the last week," he said.
