New code of practice for dentists comes into effect
It is hoped a new code of practice for dentists which comes into effect today will promote transparancy and enhance public confidence in the industry.
From today, all dentists must display their private fees for a variety of treatments in their practices, allowing members of the public to view them before their consultation.
The Dental Council says it expects 100% compliance.
“Members of the public who are concerned about the display of fees should contact the Dental Council," said Dr Eamon Croke, President of the Dental Council.
"We have issued reminders to all dentists advising that failure to display fees may lead to ‘Fitness to Practice’ proceedings. We expect 100% compliance. The profession has welcomed the introduction of the Code which will promote transparency and enhance public confidence.”
Patients will be able to check fees in advance for a range of treatments including examinations, X-rays, routine and surgical extractions, root canal treatment and crowns.
A single fee may apply for some procedures while the fees for others may be shown as a range, with a minimum and maximum clearly stated. Where a range of fees applies, it is not permitted to set a minimum price only.
The Code of Practice can be viewed on the Council’s website, www.dentalcouncil.ie.
