An 18-year-old man is to appear in court later charged in connection with a serious assault on a Cavan pensioner last year.

Johnny Golden died in hospital last October, four weeks after being attacked at his home.

Neighbours found the 73-year-old seriously injured at his home in Nedd, Doogary in Killeshandra on September 7 last.

The pensioner, who was not married and lived alone, had been badly assaulted and had suffered serious head and internal injuries.

He was rushed to hospital but died on October 6.

As part of the investigation, gardaí last night arrested an 18-year-old man.

He is being held at Ballyconnell Garda Station and will be brought before a special sitting of the local district court at 10.30am this morning.
