John Bruton rules out running for President

Former Taoiseach John Bruton has said he will not be running for President.

Mr Bruton ended months of speculation in a statement this afternoon, which confirms he was asked by Fine Gael to run but upon reflection, decided against it.

He said that at no point did he ask for the powers of President to be expanded, and that he would campaign for whomever Fine Gael selects.

Full statement by John Bruton, former Taoiseach:

"I was asked by the Fine Gael party to allow my name to be one among those to go forward, in accordance with its established procedures, for possible selection as the party’s nominee to contest the Presidency of Ireland.

"I discussed the matter thoroughly with the party’s representative. It is a very great honour to have been asked. I promised to reflect carefully on the request, and respond. I did so about 10 days ago.

"I said, with regret, that I did not wish my name to be among those considered. I said that I would campaign enthusiastically, as a party member, for whoever the party selects.

"I commend the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny for his work in restoring national morale in difficult times, and will support him in every way I can.

"In light of some commentary, I should add that, at no time in the discussion, did I make any request that the role of the President be expanded or altered. Recent Presidents have demonstrated that very valuable work for the country can be done by the President within the existing constitutional arrangements."
