President Mary McAleese has said that she is "deeply saddened" by the death of former Taoiseach Dr Garret FitzGerald, who has passed away at the age of 85.

In a statement this morning the President described Dr FitzGerald as "the Renaissance man of our time".

She said the two-time Taoiseach was "a true public servant who constantly strove to make Ireland a better place for all of its people".

The President said his thoughtful writing, distinctive voice and probing intellect all combined to make him one of our national treasures.

Former president Mary Robinson has described Dr FitzGerald as a moral political leader of great integrity who was loved by Irish people young and old.

Mrs Robinson said he had a great capacity for love and friendship and that he gave his time and boundless energies to the country he loved so much.
