Figures to be published later by the Department of Education suggest that while fewer students are dropping out of school, those who do are leaving at a younger age.

The problem is most prevalent in Limerick city where 125 students or almost 10% of its second level intake in 2004 did not sit the Junior Certificate and another 175 did not do the Leaving Certificate.
