DJ Carey and partner ordered to repay €18m to AIB

Former Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey and his partner Sarah Newman, formerly of Dragon's Den, have been ordered to repay around €9m each to AIB.

The Commercial Court heard the debt relates to a property at the K Club in Co Kildare.

The court has ordered former hurler Carey to pay €9.5m to AIB after defaulting on a mortgage loan for properties at the K Club in Straffan and at Mount Juliet.

The 20-year-old loan was taken out in 2007.

His partner Sarah Newman, of Dragon's Den fame, also has to repay the bank about €9m, the bulk of which relates to guarantees she had given to AIB on her partner's behalf.

Neither objected to the judgement orders being made against them. Mr Justice Peter Kelly has given DJ Carey a stay of four weeks to come up with a plan to pay off the debt, but refused to give Ms Newman additional time to make the repayments.
