Army getting to grips with gorse fires in Mayo

Efforts to bring widespread gorse fires in the north-west under control are continuing this morning.

One hundred Army personnel and three Air Corps helicopters are being deployed in west Donegal to help contain the blazes.

More than 100 firefighters have been struggling for the last 48 hours to contain what is described as the worst fires in living memory in the county.

It is believed they had been started deliberately.

In Mayo, authorities say they are beginning to gain the upper hand, after gorse fires broke out on the Pontoon road in Caslebar on Saturday.
