Byrne murder charge teen remanded

A youth accused of the murder of teenager David Byrne, who died following a stabbing in Dublin last month, was remanded in custody today for a further four weeks.

The 19-year-old, who was from in Drimnagh in south west Dublin, suffered damage to his kidneys on March 19 last. He had left his home at the Davitt House complex just after 10pm and was found injured at a car park, at the Emmet Court residential complex, in Inchicore.

A local resident rang gardaí and when uniformed officers and paramedics arrived at the scene just before 10.30pm Mr Byrne was still alive. He was rushed by ambulance to St James’s Hospital but was pronounced dead there at 11.45pm.

Last week a 17-year-old south Dublin boy, who cannot be identified because he is a juvenile, had been charged with the murder of Mr Byrne.

The boy had then been remanded in custody and made his second appearance in relation to the charge at the Dublin Children's Court this morning. No application for bail was made.

Defence solicitor Michelle Finan told Judge Eamon O'Brien that there “ is consent to a remand for four weeks, in custody.”

Judge O'Brien remanded the boy in custody to appear again at the Children's Court on May 26 next.

Dressed in a grey tracksuit and trainers the boy remained silent during the brief hearing, which was attended by his parents.

His mother and father hugged and kissed him when he was brought into the courtroom and again as he was led out.
