Suspected arson attack on speed camera van condemned

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for information on a suspected arson attack last night on a mobile speed camera van on the old N11 road.

The van, operated by private company GoSafe on behalf of the gardaí, was extensively damaged by a fire believed to be started deliberately.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred around 7.30pm last night.

"Gardaí would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious in and around a Citroen Relay van registration 11 KK 491 between 7pm and 7.30pm," a Garda statement said.

The van was parked approximately 1km south of Arklow on the Gorey road, the old N11.

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan condemned the attack.

"GoSafe are working on a daily basis to assist An Garda Síochána in reducing speed-related collisions and stop loss of life and serious injury on our roads," he said.

"It is so wrong that this vital work directed at making our community safer for everyone should be the subject of such mindless attack. We are fortunate that no one was injured in last night's incident and I want to condemn it in the strongest terms."
