Chances of nuclear leak affecting Ireland 'remote'

The Radiological Institute of Ireland (RPII) has confirmed that the potential for the explosion at the nuclear power plant in north eastern Japan this morning to have implications in Ireland is "remote".

The RPII met Government departments and agencies to review the available information and assess the consequences for Ireland.

Earlier today the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna confirmed that an explosion had occurred at Unit 1 on the Fukushima Dai-ichi Site following yesterday’s earthquake and tsunami.

Dr Ann McGarry, the RPII Chief Executive said: "The distance between Ireland and Japan means that in the highly unlikely event of contamination reaching Ireland, the levels would be insignificant.

"We are monitoring developments through official channels and will provide an updated assessment, as appropriate."
