Haughey: We have let core FF vote down
Former Fianna Fáil minister Sean Haughey said his family name had not helped him in his bid to get elected in Dublin North Central.
This will be the first time in 54 years that there has been no Haughey in the legislature since his father Charles was first elected.
“I have been elected to the Dáil on four separate occasions; on this occasion they decided not to elect me to the Dáil,” Mr Haughey said.
He added: “We have let the core Fianna Fáil vote down, we have had a very difficult few years, mistakes were made.
“The people have spoken, they have spoken very clearly. We need to assess what they have said, we need to take it from here and listen to what they have said.”
Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald, expected to get a seat in Dublin Central, said: “We are very pleased and I look forward to seeing lots of Sinn Féin deputies walking into the next Dáil.”
