Louth man sought by Spanish authorities appears before High Court
A Louth man wanted by Spanish authorities to serve a two-year sentence for the 2008 manslaughter of his wife has appeared before the High Court this afternoon.
Dermot McCardle, arrested this morning on foot of a European arrest warrant, was remanded in custody with consent to bail.
Mr McArdle was found guilty by a Spanish court in 2008 of the manslaughter of his wife Kelly Ann Corcoran and sentenced to two years imprisonment.
The mother-of-two died following a fall from a hotel balcony in Marbella.
Mr McCardle was allowed to return home to Ireland pending the outcome of the appeals process.
When he failed to return to Spain to serve his sentence, an arrest warrant was issued by the Spanish authorities.
The 41-year-old was arrested this morning after he presented himself at Dundalk Garda Station.
Under the terms of bail he is to sign on daily at Dundalk Garda Station, surrender his passport and remain at his residence of 8 Brookfield, Haynestown, Dundalk, Co Louth.
The court decided that an "independent surety" of €20,000 is also to be set as one of the bail conditions - €5,000 of which is to be lodged as soon as possible.
McCardle is to appear in court at Cloverhill again on February 9.
