Micheál Martin has officially resigned as a member of the Cabinet with the Taoiseach taking over the position.

The President Mary McAleese has today accepted the resignation of the now former Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has told the Dáil that he has assigned the portfolio to himself.

In the Dáil, the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny responded to the Taoiseach's announcement.

Mr Kenny said: "I hope it doesn't turn out like some of the other things you have been in charge of. At least you will be able to get away legitimately to do business on behalf of the country."
