O'Keeffe: Seanad referendum could take place on election day

Enterprise Minister Batt O'Keeffe today said it was possible that a referendum on whether or not to abolish the Seanad could take place on the same day as the General Election.

However Minister O'Keeffe stressed that while the matter had been discussed briefly at Cabinet level, no decision had yet been taken.

The matter is not high on the Government's agenda, he added, but further discussions will be held over the coming days.

"I think it's possible to do it," he said. "Everything is possible in politics."

"But I certainly would not say at this stage that it is the top agenda for us."

Minister O'Keeffe also hinted that the election itself is likely to be held in late March.
