Gardai have arrested two men for questioning about an arson incident which caused an estimated €300,000 worth of damage to a church in Co Waterford.

The incident happened when intruders broke into St Laurence's Church at Ballinroad near Dungarvan at around 9pm on New Year’s Day.

Five units of Waterford County Fire Brigade fought to prevent the blaze spreading to the main body of the church which is 200 years old.

Gardaí arrested two men in their 30s yesterday for questioning about the break-in and arson.
