Man admits conspiring to cause explosion outside police station

A Dundalk man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cause an explosion outside a Co Armagh police station last April.

He is to be sentenced at the Special Criminal Court in the New Year.

David Murphy appeared briefly in the court this morning where he admitted “unlawfully or maliciously” conspiring with others to cause the explosion, of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious harm to people or property.

The 30-year-old, with an address at Ash ling Park, Cox's Demesne, Dundalk, Co Louth was charged with the offence last May, following the attempted bombing outside Crossable police station in South Armagh on April 3 last.

The court previously heard that the investigation was of a cross-border nature and had been a complex inquiry.

Murphy's defence counsel, Mr Patrick Gage by SC, requested that sentencing in the matter be put back until the New Year.

Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding at the three-judge court, agreed to pass sentence in January, and remanded Murphy in custody until then.
