Helpline launched for older people affected by cold snap

Three volunteer groups have teamed up to provide a helpline for older people who are house-bound by the current ice and snow and who need a volunteer to bring them essential supplies.

The three groups - Age Action, the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Muintir na Tire - have come together to provide a network of volunteers in communities across Ireland who can respond to older people who may be facing difficulties.

“Our concern is that the forecast for snow and freezing temperatures in the coming days means that the snow which has already fallen will be with us for the next week, and that some older people will be house-bound for up to a fortnight before there is any sign of a thaw,” Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins said.

“Few households will have sufficient stocks of food, fuel and medicine to get through this period without some outside assistance.”

The helpline service is being offered to older people who are not receiving visits and who may be running into difficulties as a result.

The helpline service is accessible by contacting:

Age Action 01-4756989

Muintir na Tire 086-6000751

Society of St Vincent de Paul 01-8386990
