Stray PSNI bullet narrowly misses elderly man

It has emerged that an elderly man narrowly escaped death in Co Armagh last night when a stray bullet from a PSNI pistol went through the window of a house.

The shot was fired to quell a disturbance in the Garvaghy Road area of Portadown.

The elderly man is said to be in deep shock.

The North's Police Ombudsman has been called in to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

An officer is due to be questioned.

Community worker Yvonne Sterritt said: "The officer felt so frightened for the protection of the public and for (the police officers) that a shot had to be fired, very, very unfortunately. The bullet ended up in the elderly gentleman's house."
