Man charged with killing pensioner refused bail

A 29-year-old man charged with killing a pensioner last year has been refused bail.

Eddie Wing, with a temporary address at Limerick St, Roscrea, Co Tipperary was charged earlier this week with the manslaughter of Offaly publican Matt Farrell at his home and pub in Daingean, on April 1, 2009.

The 65-year-old was found dead on the floor of The Gaelic Bar by his son just hours after a member of the bar's staff had last seen him.

Mr Farrell had been tied to a chair and a subsequent post-mortem revealed he had died as a result of trauma to the head.

Mr Wing was also charged with burglary at the bar on the same date and with burgling four other pubs in Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Kilkenny in February 2009.

Mr Wing’s solicitor, John Hughes, applied for bail on behalf of his client yesterday (Friday) at Cloverhill District Court, where he had been remanded in custody.

However, gardaí objected and Judge William Early refused the application.

He remanded him in custody until November 5 for service of a book of evidence.
