EU agency recommends reducing speed limits in Ireland

Europe's top road safety agency is recommending that the speed limit on some of Ireland's roads be cut by a third to make them safer.

This could see some main national roads having a limit of 70 kilometres an hour, down from 100 kilometres an hour.

The European Road Safety Council believes only those roads with dividing crash barriers should be allowed to keep the higher limit.

"We do know that national roads without road barriers are significantly higher-risk," said AA director of policy Conor Faughnan.

"There might be some merit in it, but I think you’d need to assess it case-by-case."
