A TD has criticised the National Roads Authority over the lack of rest-stops to answer a "call of nature" on the Dublin to Cork motorway.

The authority today told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that it had intended to build the facilities but that there is no funding available.

PAC Chairman and Cork Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen described the absence of toilet facilities as a massive error by the NRA.

Deputy Allen said he would have expected better forward planning.

"In all of the complicated CPO (Compulsory Purchase Order) procedures down through the years, the public inquiries… you omitted, or forgot, to acquire land in order to provide basic services," Deputy Allen said.

"I think that is a massive cock-up."
