Revenue seizes 14 million cigarettes in smuggling crackdown
The Revenue Commissioners has announced the results of a major crackdown on cigarette smuggling.
The nationwide operation, which involved Revenue enforcement officers from all regions, ran for a fortnight in mid-July.
It resulted in the seizure of almost 14 million cigarettes and 200 kilos of tobacco worth almost €6m.
Revenue focused on retail outlets, local distribution networks, ports and airports.
Last year Revenue seized cigarettes and tobacco worth almost €96m in total.
So far this year cigarettes and tobacco worth €55m have been seized.
