Two men injured in latest Dublin shooting

Two men were injured in a shooting attack today as they sat in a van in west Dublin.

A Garda spokesman said they were wounded several times but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The pair were in a white van on the River Road near the Tolka River between Finglas and Cabra when a gunman approached and opened fire a number of times before fleeing.

A Garda spokesman said: “Two men in a van were approached by at least one gunman. The occupants of the van received a number of gunshot wounds and the gunman is believed to have escaped on foot.”

The injured men were taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.

The gun attack is the latest in a string of shootings across Dublin in the last month

The Corbally brothers, Paul and Kenneth, were shot in a double murder in Neilstown in June, Colm Owens was gunned down at an industrial estate in Finglas last Friday and suspected killer Stephen “Madzer” Byrne was shot dead in the north inner city on Tuesday.

A teenager arrested over the latest killing was released without charge today.

He was one of two people detained in raids late on Tuesday, a few hours after “Madzer” Byrne was shot in the head and chest.

The other suspect, a man in his 20s, remained in custody.

Gardaí believe three young men were with the dead man and scattered when a gunman cycled up and opened fire.

The attack took place at 4.45pm at the corner of Sheriff Street and St Laurence Place East, a stone’s throw from Dublin’s financial district.

Byrne, from Mariner’s Port, Sheriff Street, was the prime suspect for the murder of Stephen Ledden, 28, in nearby Upper Oriel Street in 2006.
