Eight killed in Donegal car crash

Eight young men were killed in a road accident last night, gardaí said today.

The men were in a car travelling near Buncrana in Co Donegal. The car and another vehicle were in collision at about 10.20pm last night on the Drumfree/Clonmany Road.

Garda liaison officers were expected to spend several hours this morning contacting the families of those who died.

Gardaí said later that it was believed the eight victims were in two different cars.

The road remained cordoned off to allow for further technical examinations by road traffic officers.

The dead were all believed to be from the Inishowen area, including Dunaff, Clonmany, Ballyliffin and Buncrana.

One of the cars was a Toyota Corolla. The driver of that car, who was from Dunaff, was understood to have been at a bingo night in Buncrana and was returning home when the accident happened.

He was not married and had lived in Dunaff all his life.
