A pipe bomb was made safe today following a security alert in south Belfast.

A pipe bomb was made safe today following a security alert in south Belfast.

The crude viable explosive was discovered in Fane Street shortly before 11am. It was found by police carrying out searches following a report of suspicious activity.

The area was cordoned off, army technical officers attended and a controlled explosion was carried out.
