People in mortgage arrears 'borrowed more than six times their salaries'

Almost one in five borrowers availing of state assistance in paying their mortgage borrowed between six and eight times their salary for their homeloan, it has been revealed.

New figures from the Department of Social Protection show 18% of the 17,000 people on the mortgage supplement scheme borrowed more than six times their salaries to buy their houses.
