Cyclist and motorists may hold clue in murder investigation
A cyclist and two motorists could hold vital clues to the murder of a GAA fan who died almost a week after a vicious street attack, gardaí said today.
Martin O’Gorman, a 63-year-old building contractor from Athlone, Co Westmeath, was attacked in Navan, Co Meath, in the early hours of June 21.
He died six days later.
Detectives revealed a man riding a bike passed near the scene of the attack on Academy Street about 10 minutes before it happened.
Gardaí said the cyclist, wearing dark clothing with a hooded top, trousers or tracksuit bottoms with white stripes and white running shoes, was heading towards the Dublin Road at about 12.20am.
Officers also revealed a Black VW Golf or similar hatchback car travelled in the same direction 10 minutes after the attack. A saloon car also passed the crime scene in the other direction at the same time.
Mr O’Gorman, known as “Mairt” and who worked in the family business Midland Crane Hire, was discovered lying with head injuries by a taxi driver on Academy Street in Navan at around 12.30am on Monday June 21.
The GAA fan had been in Navan to socialise after Meath’s victory over Laois in Tullamore.
He was pronounced dead the following Sunday afternoon at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at Navan garda station.
