A Seanad committee will begin investigating Ivor Callely's reasons for claiming €81,000 in expenses today.

The Fianna Fáil Senator and former Dublin North Central TD has been invited to appear before the committee which will be held in public, rather than in private session as is the norm.

Ivor Callely resigned the party whip earlier this month apologising for the controversy his expenses had generated.

He had been criticised after claiming €81,000 in expenses in the last three years using an address in Bantry in West Cork.

Today's public hearing begins at 10am.
