Supreme Court role for McKechnie

High Court Judge Liam McKechnie has been appointed to the Supreme Court, a government spokesman said today.

The move comes after the retirement of Mr Justice Hugh Geoghegan last month.

The government will now advise President Mary McAleese of the nomination in accordance with constitutional procedures.

A graduate of University College Cork, Mr Justice McKechnie was called to the Bar of Ireland in 1972 and appointed a High Court judge in 2000.
