Pharmacists welcome new generic drug legislation

Pharmacists have welcomed new legislation allowing doctors prescribe generic drugs for patients instead of branded drugs.

The new system should save a minimum of €78m annually when it is introduced next year.

In order for the scheme to work, a list of specific drugs that can be substituted for brand names will be drawn up to aid pharmacists and doctors.
