Dublin celebrates Bloomsday

Several events are being organised in Dublin to mark Bloomsday, the day on which James Joyce set his masterpiece 'Ulysses'.

There will be the traditional Bloomsday Breakfast, along with readings, songs in Temple Bar and film screenings.

The date of June 16, 1904, on which the characters Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom each undertook their own fictional journey through Dublin in what was to become one of the most acclaimed novels of the 20th century.

The celebrations began last weekend with walking and bus tours around the city, but today's events kick off in Dublin this morning with the traditional breakfast at the James Joyce centre.

Actors will entertain diners with readings from the book whilst later on there will be songs and readings in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar and film adaptations at Cineworld on Parnell Square.

Bloomsday is celebrated every year in around 60 countries around the world.
