Cork shooting accused remanded in custody

Gardaí arrested a man today and charged him with having a loaded sawn-off shotgun at a pub in Cork two weeks ago.

Detective Sergeant Denis Cahill arrested Anthony O’Leary (aged 36), of 3 Liam Healy Road, Fairhill, Cork, and charged him with having the weapon at Mo Chúisle public house on 40 Blarney Street, Cork, on Friday May 21.

It was reported at the time that an armed man in the pub was shot in the stomach by a member of the armed Regional Response Unit and taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment for his injury.

Solicitor, Donal Daly, was appointed to represent O’Leary on free legal aid yesterday.

Mr Daly said the defendant was not working.

Inspector Michael McGuire said the state application was to have the defendant remanded in custody until June 10 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Daly said there was no application for bail.

Judge Con O’Leary then remanded the accused in custody until next Thursday.

The charge accuses him of having in his possession a firearm, namely a Baikal double-barrel sawn-off shotgun loaded with two cartridges with intent to endanger life, cause serious injury or damage property at Mo Chúisle public house on May 21.
