Taoiseach orders Callely to explain expenses

The Taoiseach has this evening ordered Senator Ivor Callelly to furnish a written explanation of his expenses claims to the Caoitherlach of the Seanad.

Brian Cowen made the request through the General Secretary of Fianna Fáil today.

A spokesperson says the Taoiseach is adamant everyone be fully compliant on their expenses.

A spokesperson for the Greens says there must be appropriate use of taxpayers money and they will review their position once the former Junior Minister makes his explanation.

Throughout the day pressure has built on Senator Callelly with Seanad colleagues demanding an explanation.

It was revealed at the weekend that the former Dublin North Central TD has claimed more than €80,000 in expenses since 2007.

He has made the claims for travel and accommodation on the basis that he was living at an address in Bantry in West Cork.

Expenses published for two months this year show Senator Callelly made no claim in April and returned his claim for March.
