The AA has said it will oppose Government plans to introduce the new €200 parking levy this summer.

The levy, which was announced in the budget of October 2008, will be trialled in parts of Dublin, before being rolled out to other cities and towns.

The rate is to be imposed on workers in urban areas who currently enjoy a free parking space.

If an employer does not impose the levy on their workers through their payroll system, they could face fines of up to €3,000.
