Taoiseach Brian Cowen has strongly rejected claims by Fine Gael's Richard Bruton who accused him of trying to pre-empt the banking inquiry.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has strongly rejected claims by Fine Gael's Richard Bruton who accused him of trying to pre-empt the banking inquiry.

In a statement this morning, a spokesperson for the Taoiseach said the banking inquiry is independent of the Government and defended Mr Cowen's role as Finance Minister at the time.
