Bomb found near Armagh police station
A mortar bomb was abandoned close to a police station near the border in the North, it was revealed today.
Police said the device in Keady, south Armagh, was viable and could have caused death or serious injury.
Dissident republicans have been responsible for a string of attacks on police officers and soldiers.
Chief Inspector Ken Mawhinney said: “Yet again, a small group of criminal cowards have achieved nothing more than disruption and inconvenience for local people.
“This device had the potential to cause death or serious injury and those responsible have shown a reckless and callous disregard for the people of Keady.”
Police received a report of an abandoned van in the Davis Street area this morning.
Army technical officers attended and a viable mortar-type device was found inside the van. The device was made safe and taken away for examination.
