Man's body found in flat complex

Detectives were tonight probing the violent death of a man whose bloodied body was discovered in a flat complex.

The victim was found by a neighbour in a communal hallway outside the apartment he shared with his partner on Grove Street, Mullingar.

The man was aged in his late 20s and worked in a local store.

He was originally from the North and had lived in the town for a number of years.

Gardai said they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the suspicious death and are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Forensic officers were at the scene throughout the day and State Pathologist Marie Cassidy examined the man’s body in the hallway before the his remains were removed.

Gardaí appealed to anyone who witnessed anything unusual in the area between 6pm on Sunday and 9am on Monday to come forward.

Local councillor Ruth Illingworth said residents were shocked by the news.

“People are currently quite concerned,” she said.

“Generally it is a quiet town. We have some trouble from time to time like any other town, but we haven’t had a homicide for five years if that’s what it is.

“People will be very shocked that there could have been a violent death here.”

Ms Illingworth said the community was already coming to terms with a number of recent tragic deaths.

“We’ve had a couple of tragedies lately. One woman died in a house fire and a young man died in a car crash,” she added.

“It’s a very sad day.”
