The eight specialist centres dealing with all breast cancer diagnosis and surgery are exceeding the target set down for access.

According to the head of the Cancer Control Programme, the majorty of centres are seeing almost all urgent referrals within one week.

Standards watchdog HIQA had said 95% of patients should be seen within two weeks of being referred by a GP.
