Lillis to be sentenced later

Eamonn Lillis is due to be sentenced today for the manslaughter of his wife Celine Cawley at their home in Dublin.

The 52-year-old was cleared of her murder at Windgate Road, Howth on December 15, 2008 by a jury at the Central Criminal Court last Friday evening.

At the time Lillis told gardaí and emergency services that his wife had been attacked by an intruder, an account that he later admitted was a lie.

Ms Cawley was found lying in a pool of blood on decking at the back of the couple's Howth home.

The prosecution alleged the accused had struck her three times on the head with a brick but Mr Lillis gave evidence that she banged her head during a row they had over his not taking out the rubbish,

Having heard details at trial of his extra-marital affair with masseuse Jean Treacy in the end the jury found by majority that the State had not proved intent to kill or cause serious harm.

The father-of-one is due to be sentenced for manslaughter at a hearing later today.
